The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace

Barbara will sing the role of Harriet Beecher Stowe in the New York City premiere of composer Kamala Sankaram and librettist Rob Handel’s The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace with New Camerata Opera. This one-act chamber opera tells the story of Ada, Countess of Lovelace, a brilliant mathematician and the daughter of Lord Byron, who has been asked to help Charles Babbage with his work on the Difference Engine. The revolutionary concepts that she put forth in her notes about the potential ability of the Engine to carry out an algorithm led Ada to be considered the world’s first computer programmer.

An immersive cabaret will be performed immediately following the opera, featuring thematically-related repertoire. Barbara will perform a song by William Bolcom. Click here to purchase tickets.

Venus and Adonis / Savitri

New Camerata Opera presents a double-bill of Venus and Adonis and Savitri: two works that feature strong women at the heart of their stories.

John Blow's Venus and Adonis was originally a masque for the entertainment of King Charles II. The work was the first to have been written by a female librettist, Anne Finch, and tells the tale of Venus and the demise of her lover, Adonis. Barbara will sing the role of Venus.

Based on an episode in the Mahabharata, Gustav Holst's Savitri was innovative in its day and still mesmerizes. This production will honor the Indian culture which gave us this story and feature singers of South Asian heritage.

Directed by Jennifer Williams, with Music Direction by Stephan Fillare

Performances are 11/29 and 12/1 at 7:30pm, 12/2 at 2:00pm. Click here to purchase tickets.

DIVIDE LIGHT

New Camerata Opera presents the New York premiere of DIVIDE LIGHT! Barbara is thrilled to be a part of this dynamic ensemble cast.

Lesley Dill, one of the most prominent American artists working at the intersection of language, performance and fine art, has paired with composer Richard Marriott, Artistic Director and Founder of the acclaimed Clubfoot Orchestra, to create DIVIDE LIGHT - a new opera based on the text of Emily Dickinson.

With lavish costumes and striking projections, Dill says that DIVIDE LIGHT “is a story of the journey of the heart and soul. The story of the music, costumes, and video projections follow an arc of emotional metaphor: from Vulnerability, to Anguish, to Thoughtfulness, to Loneliness and Death, to Exultation, Exhilaration, Ecstasy and Immensity.”

Performances are 4/26 & 4/28 at 8pm, 4/29 at 3pm. Purchase tickets here.
